Sports Newsletter (Autumn Term 2) - 20th December 2024

Welcome

Welcome to our Sports Newsletter. This newsletter will be shared every half term with a round-up of all the sports news from events and clubs.

Events

It has been another incredibly busy half term for sport at Green Lanes.

The first event this half term was the Year 6 basketball tournament at Stanborough. A team of ten children from across Year 6 was chosen to represent Green Lanes at this event. We were incredibly impressed with their dedication and team work which helped them to progress to the District Finals at Ridgeway the following week where we competed against schools from across Welwyn and Hatfield.

Our next event of the term was cross country at DeHavilliand. Two boys and two girls from Year 3 – 6 were selected to take part in this challenging event in which Year 3 ran 800m up to Year 6 who ran 2000m. All the children taking part were incredibly enthusiastic and we were so impressed with their determination. Eight of the sixteen children finished in the top two in their race with Max (Y3), Riordan (Y4), Alice (Y5) and Marvellous (Y5) all finishing first. Their fantastic efforts helped Green Lanes to win the Hatfield and District Sports Association Cross Country for the first time since 2018.

The following week eight children from Year 6 got the opportunity to take part in a TAP (Targeted Activity Program) event at Onslow. As part of this event the children got to try a range of sports such as golf, badminton, curling, speed stacking and archery which all of the children thoroughly enjoyed.

The next sports event was the archery festival at Ridgeway where eight children from across Year 6 were invited to take part. This was an incredibly busy event with twenty-one other schools also attending. As part of the event the children took part in a range of activities and challenges involving archery. We were so impressed with how encouraging the children were to each other.

Later the same week, six children from Year 6 were invited to take part in a TAP trampolining event at Gosling Sports Park. The children all had a fantastic time and were a pleasure to take to the event.

The final event of the term was the netball fixtures night at Stanborough. Both teams played brilliantly despite the cold we were so impressed with how they worked as team and their great communication. Both teams won two of their three games and are looking forward to the netball league continuing after Christmas.

Football results

We have also had an incredibly successful start to the football season this year with both the boys and girls teams undefeated so far.

Green Lanes 3 – 0 Ryde (Neiko and Ruben)

Clubs

It has been lovely to see so many children attending clubs this term both after school clubs and the lunchtime football and badminton clubs. We are looking forward to new clubs for next term.

Sporting Stars

Max Dissington (Year 3) won silver at British Judo Council Nationals in the boys 8-9 year old U24kg class. Well done Max!

Sienna Roberts (Year 6) went with her cheer team Twisted Cheer and Dance to Disneyland Paris at the weekend for a cheerleading competition. Her team named ‘Bleue’ came away with a second place title and also had a perfect, zero deduction score! These routines were learnt and perfected in only 2 months of intense hard work! All 4 teams gained first and second places against strong competition, and one of the teams also won the overall grand champion award as well. It was a hugely successful trip all round and everyone had an amazing time together in Disneyland! Well done Sienna!

 Inter-School Archery

The children in Year 4, 5 and 6 also got the chance to compete in the inter-school archery competition. Mrs Moxham from Stanborough visited the school to run sessions with each class in Year 4 - 6. As part of these sessions, they had a demonstration of the correct technique and then the opportunity to practise and record their scores. At the end of the sessions, the scores for each class were added together and compared to the other classes in Stanborough's sports family. Congratulations to Van Gogh who came 4th out of 12 in the Year 4 competition and Da Vinci who came 3rd in the Year 6 competition. The top ten scorers from Da Vinci all received a bronze medal. Well done to Layne, Andri, Ethan, Grayson, Ali, Isobel, Belle, Renee, Jax and Bay.
