Headteacher's update

Dear parent/carer

We had a great day today celebrating everything books. We even involved the local Community Police who helped us stage a character break-in. Today was about getting excited about books and everyone had an amazing time working out which characters had broken into their classes. We have also given you the recommended reading list for every year group, so you can donate a book or find good books for your own child to read.

We have relaunched our Class Read with Fizzy and Kandinsky all recorded their reading, so they spent the afternoon with Fizzy in the classroom. You just need to record using the Boom Read website or app and if 25 children record, then Fizzy spends an afternoon in class.

We are currently looking for a Community Governor. This is not a parent governor but someone who would like to be involved in the decisions that we make at the school. If you could put the word out to work colleagues or family members, that would be great.

We will sadly be saying goodbye to Mrs Harcombe, our office manager, in a fortnight. I know you will join me in wishing her well for the future.

Remember we are always grateful for donations of toys, particularly Lego, pots and pans and kitchen utensils. Please leave these at the main entrance.

Warm regards,

Michele Johnson

Foundation Stage

This week in Foundation we have been learning all about Pancake Day and the different ways this is celebrated around the world. We have enjoyed reading our book, 'Mr Wolf's Pancakes' and the children have made their own pancakes in the mud kitchen, the playdough area and in the role play house. Today we celebrated World Book Day and the children all looked fantastic dressed up as their favourite book characters. Don't forget to use your book token to pick up your free book from any participating shop.

Year 1

Now we are halfway through Year 1 we have begun to formalise our learning a little more. We are now learning within our classes rather than colour groups. The children have taken very well to our new way of working. There are still lots of opportunities for children to learn practically within the classroom setting. We are still using our outdoor learning environment where needed. The children are now having a morning break on the playground and the opportunities for movement breaks in the afternoon. This week our CUSP text is Here We Are by Oliver Jeffers. We will be reading this text for two weeks. In Maths we continue our work on problem solving. Perry Class are learning how to programme beebots in the afternoons while Kahlo Class are carrying out a CUSP Science unit on Materials. We will rotate our PM learning next week. Please keep an eye out in the school diary for our information evening about the Phonics Screening Check later on this half term. We will go through what will happen and have lots of resources you can take away to practise at home.

Year 2

Year 2 has had an amazing start to this new half term. Really well done Y2. We started last week consolidating our DT mechanism learning by making our own. We got to use a variety of new tools, including hacksaws and glue guns! We were all very excited and intrigued by them, and we used them with such confidence and maturity!! We were all very pleased with our end results. This week we have been busy rebalancing calculations to support subtraction in Maths. It has proven to be a bit tricky! In English, we have begun to look at non-chronological reports about Green Lanes, with a focus on using subordinating conjunctions and subheadings to organise our writing. Did you know that non-chronological reports can be written in any order? In Science, we have been revisiting living things and their habitats. We have been very pleased with the amount of information we have recalled! In addition, we have also been looking at Online Safety, where we have been considering the risks involved with using technology.

Year 3

We have had a very busy first two weeks back in Year 3. We have used counters, cubes and beadstrings during our practical Maths lessons. This is to help our understanding of multiplication and sharing an amount equally when dividing. We are excited to have started our new class book ‘Operation Gadgetman’ by Malorie Blackman and have really enjoyed the first few chapters. It was great to see so many different costumes for World Book Day and was enjoyable to listen to all the children share different authors and stories that they been reading.

Year 4

Year 4 has been learning all about the Vikings in their History unit this week – the Vikings were indeed fierce warriors, but we learnt some other very interesting facts about them too! For example, it is a myth that they wore horned helmets.

In English we have made a great start on the adverts for our persuasive writing unit. The children have all thought of some amazing inventions – I’m sure we’ll see some of them in the Dragon’s Den one day! They have tried hard to use rhetorical questions, expanded noun phrases and include organisational features such as bullet points too.

In our maths lessons we have looked at fractions and used bar models to help us answer word problems about fractions of quantities.

Finally, all the children looked amazing in their World Book Day costumes today, and they were so quick to work out who had broken into our classrooms and what they had taken! Well done Year 4.

Year 5

We hope you're all doing well! We wanted to share some exciting updates about what your child will be focusing on in their English, Science, and Maths lessons over the coming weeks. There are lots of engaging activities planned that will support their learning and help them apply concepts in fun and interactive ways.

English – Romeo and Juliet
In English, students will be diving into the classic play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. They will explore the themes of love, fate, and conflict, as well as analyse characters and their motivations. We encourage you to ask your child about the key scenes they’re studying, and perhaps even watch a film adaptation together to further enhance their understanding of the text.

Science – Earth and Space
In Science, we’re excited to take a deep dive into the fascinating world of Earth and Space. The students will explore the relationships between the Moon, the Earth, and the Sun, including understanding how the Earth’s rotation causes day and night, the phases of the Moon, and the solar system as a whole. There will be hands-on activities and projects that allow students to observe and experiment with these concepts. Encourage your child to share what they discover about the planets and how the Earth fits into the vast universe!

Maths – Practical Maths Practice
In Maths, we are focusing on practical applications of mathematics, specifically through fun and interactive games designed to reinforce timetables and other essential skills. Students will engage in various activities that make learning about numbers enjoyable and help them strengthen their understanding of multiplication tables. You can support this at home by playing timestable games or setting challenges for your child to complete. This will not only help them master their tables but also boost their confidence in maths.

We’re excited about the engaging learning opportunities ahead and look forward to seeing how the students continue to grow in their understanding across all subjects. As always, feel free to reach out if you have any questions or would like more information.

Thank you for your continued support!

Year 6

It's been another busy week in year 6 packed with cooking and World Book Day! We have been looking at the ways in which food can affect how we feel, based on the different nutrients that they contain. We made tomato pasta and noodle soup, which was definitely the firm favourite! Next week, we will be finishing the unit by making a delicious sensory salad! We will be posting the recipes on Google Classroom so that the children can have a go at making these themselves at home.
World Book Day was a busy one! Willy Wonka and Skellig broke into our classrooms. Luckily, they left us lots of clues to solve the crime. We are very proud of all the hard work that the year group put into their costumes and the activities they did today.

Join your local library today!

To celebrate World Book Day, not only would we like the children to come dressed up as their favourite book character, we would also like them to join their local library.

We are planning a trip to the library, in small groups, and in order to visit,  parents will need to sign up. So that we know your child is registered, please complete the consent form on Arbor (under Arbor Trips). Once we know your child is registered with their library, we will arrange for them to participate in one of the trips. We will send further details of the trips once confirmed.
