Headteacher's update

Dear Parent/Carer,

This is your fortnightly newsletter giving you updates and telling you what is happening at Green Lanes Primary School.

Thank you for your support this term. We have achieved much this term, including:

Leading talks and tours about the impact of therapeutic environments and practices. Green Lanes Primary works in partnership with a range of research partners, including Education Endowment Foundation for Science, Jen Foster therapeutic behaviour systems and Shahana Knight TPC therapeutic classrooms.

Our data sets from 2024, which have been validated by the DFE, put the school in achieving results significantly above National and County results.

Sports results achieved by the school have also been amazing with participation in so many sporting competitions and with our children also reaching county finals in athletics.

We have developed our love of reading with weekly year group visits to the local library. Just sign up with your local library and your child can join these sessions.

We staged a whole school book character break in for World Book day which got everyone excited about books and thank you to our local PCSOs who joined in.

So what will the summer bring? Lots more exciting opportunities for your child to have every opportunity to do the very best they can. You will also have a chance in parent consultation and in book looks to see for yourself how your child is doing.

Remember we are always looking for donations of toys, clothes for dress up (we are particularly looking for real-size hats, waistcoats and shirts. Particularly work uniforms such as builders' hats, hi-vis or doctor's coats).

Just a reminder that we finish an hour earlier on Friday 4th April. We look forward to seeing you on Tuesday 22nd April. Have a great Easter break.

Warm regards,

Michele Johnson

Foundation Stage

Last week the children in Foundation learnt all about road safety. We thought about safe places to cross roads, as well as how to keep ourselves safe when we are in cars, on pavements or on bikes. This week we have been learning all about Easter. We talked about the Easter story and the children have all enjoyed making a variety of Easter crafts such as cards, wreaths and cone shaped chicks! Have a lovely break and we will see you all next term.

Year 1

The children have thoroughly enjoyed our D&T topics this week. Kahlo Class have learnt to sew and made their own hand warmers from felt. They continued to learn even when they found it hard threading their needles. Both classes are very excited to show you their creations at 'Green Lanes is Great' evening later in the year. Perry Class persevered when constructing their gingerbread houses from toast and icing. They found it very hard not to eat their building materials!

In Phonics we have begun our revision unit for the phonics screening check. We will review all sounds that could be present on the check. We will be sending home a summary sheet and some words to practise reading each week. Please do review these at home regularly.

Year 2

What a busy few weeks it has been for Year 2 again.  We have now finished our History Topic on Flight, which we all thoroughly enjoyed! We found it fascinating just how quickly flight evolved in such a short period of time. In maths last week, we were introduced to our Times Tables grids, which we were all very excited about.  This week we have been using different strategies for adding 2 digit numbers, including 'Think 10' and 'Rebalancing'.

In English we have been reading 'The Street Beneath My Feet', which is a book that teaches us about all the different layers of the earth. It is a concertina book, which means we have had to open it up all across the floor! Today the children have really enjoyed their Easter Egg hunt and decorating them.

Have a lovely break and enjoy the rest.

Year 3

Year 3 had an exciting start to this week with our visit to Stanborough Secondary School. We were invited to take part in a Buzzi Badminton event. We learnt more about the sport and worked with Year 8 helpers to complete lots of different games and challenges.

Our recent Maths topic on Fractions has been the most popular this year. We have been impressed with how quickly Year 3 are picking up the steps to working out fractions of quantities and recording this in their books. We will be building on this after Easter as we move onto adding and subtraction of fractions. We hope you all have an enjoyable and restful Easter break.

Year 4

Thank you year 4 for a fantastic final week. You have all worked hard, and it has been fantastic to see such a calm and focused environment, particularly during our writing sessions.

Last week, we became a little more expert in our understanding of devices needed to write a successful third person adventure story. This week, we have begun to draft our stories. Everyone's stories have been so varied and full of adventure. In maths, everyone has worked hard on their 144 grids. Make sure you are regularly rehearsing your timetables at home as this will support your learning in a range of maths units such as fractions. This knowledge will also support you during your multiplication check.

Last week's topic focus was linked to programming in computing. Everyone worked hard to explore writing simple algorithms to instruct the turtle when using Turtle Programmer. Our topic focus this week has been based around design and technology with a focus on designing and building structures using a multitude of materials.

Again, thank you for all of your hard work, year 4.

Year 5

Newsletter for Parents

Biography: Mae Jemison - NASA Astronaut
This term, students were writing a biography about Mae Carol Jemison, an American engineer, physician, and former NASA astronaut. She made history as the first African-American woman to travel into space aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour during the STS-47 mission in 1992. Jemison earned degrees in chemical engineering and African-American studies from Stanford University and later obtained her medical degree from Cornell University. Before joining NASA, she served as a doctor for the Peace Corps in Africa. After retiring from NASA in 1993, she founded a technology research company and a non-profit educational foundation. Jemison continues to inspire through her advocacy for science
education and exploration.

Mathematics: Learning Percentages, Decimals, and Fractions
This term, students are mastering the connections between fractions, decimals, and percentages. Key learning points include:
- Converting fractions to decimals and vice versa.
- Understanding percentages as proportions (e.g., 50% = 1/2 = 0.5).
- Solving real-world problems involving fractions and percentages, such as calculating discounts or dividing quantities.
These skills are essential for building fluency in mathematical reasoning and problem-solving.

DT Cooking: Exploring Asian Cuisine
Students are diving into Asian culinary traditions by preparing fresh summer rolls and stir-fry noodles. The summer rolls feature rice paper stuffed with vermicelli noodles, colourful vegetables like carrots and bell peppers, avocado, and greens. Stir-fry noodles incorporate vibrant flavours with soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and a mix of vegetables. These activities teach students about nutrition while honing their cooking skills.

Computing: Learning About Databases
In computing lessons, students explore databases—systems used to store and organise information efficiently. They are learning how to:
- Create tables to store data.
- Sort and filter information for analysis.
- Understand the importance of databases in everyday applications like online shopping or school record systems.

We hope these exciting topics inspire curiosity and engagement at home!

Year 6

We can't believe that we are already at the end of the spring term - it has gone by incredibly quickly and we are so proud of the hard work that year 6 have continued to show.

Over the last two weeks, we started a topic in science called 'Living Things and their Habitats' where we looked at different classes of living things such as; vertebrates, invertebrates and microorganisms. We have had some great discussions during these lessons and the children have been full of knowledge and facts about the world around them.

Across the rest of the curriculum we have been busy finishing off topics before our revision begins after Easter. The children have finished writing their fantasy stories in English, showcasing their dances in PE and learning to play Frere Jacques on the keyboards in music.

Although the children do thoroughly deserve a break, we also want to keep their brains active ready for the summer term. We will therefore be sending them home with an Easter revision book, designed for them to work through a page or two a day in order to practise lots of the topics that have been taught recently. We appreciate your support with this and look forward to seeing all of the children back in a couple of weeks!

Join your local library today!

To celebrate World Book Day, not only would we like the children to come dressed up as their favourite book character, we would also like them to join their local library.

We are planning a trip to the library, in small groups, and in order to visit,  parents will need to sign up. So that we know your child is registered, please complete the consent form on Arbor (under Arbor Trips). Once we know your child is registered with their library, we will arrange for them to participate in one of the trips. We will send further details of the trips once confirmed.
