Foundation Stage

This week in Foundation the children all took part in their very first 'Year Group Assembly'. We were very proud of their sensible, mature behaviour and their loud, clear voices. Well done to the children and we hope you enjoyed their performance, especially the singing! Next week will be our first sports day and the children have been busy practising all of their races. The children are allowed to race in their house colours. Check the list on Google Classroom for your child's team.

Year 1

Year 1 have had a fab return after half term! In our English, children have loved writing about different bugs from The Big Book of Bugs! In our maths we have finished learning about time and started onto fractions; we have learnt about a half and a quarter. Our topic lessons have covered Geography, where we have learnt about the equator and what it is like in the North and South Pole. As it is warming up, please make sure all jumpers and cardigans are named. Please ensure that your child also has a named water bottle!

Year 2

It has been such a busy start to this half term for Year 2, as usual! In English, we have now completed our unit on writing instructions and have published our work in our very best handwriting! We are so proud of what we have achieved! We have now begun our new unit, 'Writing an Entertaining Narrative', based on a Superhero. Our new book, 'Super Joe, Does NOT Do Cuddles', has had us all inspired to write! We can't wait to see what we produce. In Maths, we have been learning about fractions, concentrating on finding halves, quarters and thirds of amounts and shapes. In Topic, we are coming to the end of our Healthy Eating unit, which we have thoroughly enjoyed. We have learnt all about processed and unprocessed food and have had a go at making some ourselves. Some of it was more enjoyable than others!

Year 3

Year 3 have been finishing our Advanced Instructional Writing topic within our English lessons and used our recent 3d sculptures that were on display in our classroom as inspiration. We will be starting our next narrative unit soon, which will have a focus on descriptive language and direct speech.
In Maths, we have now moved on from Fractions on to multiplying multiples by ten and formal written multiplication. We will be continuing this over the next few weeks and learning a range of strategies to help us with this.
We have begun our History unit learning about The Romans and the impact they had on Ancient Britain. We have already learnt about who the Romans were, where they were from and how people lived in Britain before the Romans arrived. We will continue this in anticipation for our upcoming trip to the Roman Museum at Verulamium.

Year 4

Myself and the year 4 team would like to start off by thanking Picasso and Van Gough for their tireless efforts in practising their timetables. Everyone has tried their best and a great deal of fantastic progress has been made. We wish them the best of luck in their upcoming MTC check, and they should be very proud of themselves.
During English, year 4 have been recapping key punctuation and grammar knowledge, in preparation for their transition into year 5. A great deal of punctuation and grammar has been recapped, including the use of inverted commas within dialogue, accurate use of conjunctions and how to use a fronted adverbial to begin a sentence. The children have been incredibly engaged and this has been reflected in their writing.
Last week, we explored the concept of sound and sound waves within science. The children enjoyed exploring how sound travels and completing various experiments to observe this. They have also spent time rehearsing for their upcoming performance with Electric Umbrella. This takes place on the 24th June, so it would be fantastic if year 4 could continue to use Google Classroom to practice these songs further at home.

Year 5

English – Writing Balanced Arguments

This term in English, the children have been learning how to write balanced arguments. We’ve had fantastic classroom debates around the topic: Should fossil fuel cars be banned? Pupils explored both sides of the argument – considering the environmental impact of petrol and diesel vehicles, but also recognising concerns such as cost, infrastructure, and job implications in the automotive industry. The children showed excellent critical thinking and persuasive writing skills. You might enjoy asking them their opinion on the topic at home!

Maths – Scaling

In Maths, we’ve been learning about scaling, using real-life examples to explore how shapes and objects can be enlarged or reduced. The children particularly enjoyed designing scale maps and experimenting with recipes that required doubling or halving quantities. This has helped them develop a deeper understanding of proportion and ratio – essential skills for solving practical mathematical problems.

History – The Mayans

Our History lessons have taken us across the world to Central America as we started our topic on the ancient Mayan civilisation. The children have discovered how the Mayans developed advanced writing and calendar systems and built impressive cities like Chichén Itzá. We’ve also explored their beliefs, daily life, and the legacy they left behind. The children have shown great curiosity and enjoyed comparing Mayan life with our own.

Reading – “Five Children and It”

We’ve begun reading “Five Children and It” by E. Nesbit as our class novel. This magical tale has captured the children’s imaginations with its story of five siblings who discover a sand fairy that can grant wishes – with unexpected consequences! We're using the book to explore character development, prediction, and inference, and the children are already looking forward to finding out what happens next.

Thank You – Open Evening

A big thank you to all the parents and carers who attended our recent Open Evening. It was wonderful to welcome you into the classroom and share your child’s progress and achievements. Your support makes such a difference in their learning journey.

Year 6

It’s been a busy and exciting couple of weeks for our Year 6 pupils!  Last week, we began rehearsals for our upcoming production, ‘Minion Impossible: A Toy Nation’. The children have impressed us with their confidence and ability to bring their characters to life on stage. We’re sure this will be a fantastic show, and we can’t wait to share it with you!

Our new computing topic on programming games has been a big hit. Pupils have been designing and creating their own games using Scratch. It’s been wonderful to see their creativity and problem-solving skills in action as they develop their projects.

We’ve also started our history topic on significant British monarchs. The children will be learning about the legacies of William I, Henry VIII, Elizabeth I, Charles II, and Queen Victoria. They’ll eventually decide which monarch they think is most significant to our lives today. It has been lovely to see their enthusiasm for this topic so far.

Join your local library today!

To celebrate World Book Day, not only would we like the children to come dressed up as their favourite book character, we would also like them to join their local library.

We are planning a trip to the library, in small groups, and in order to visit,  parents will need to sign up. So that we know your child is registered, please complete the consent form on Arbor (under Arbor Trips). Once we know your child is registered with their library, we will arrange for them to participate in one of the trips. We will send further details of the trips once confirmed.
