Foundation Stage

The children have really enjoyed our 'Let's Grow' topic and we are excited to see if any of you managed to grow your bean. Don't forget to send in some pictures if you can.

This week in Foundation we have been learning all about butterflies! We have found out about the life cycle of a butterfly and how they start as tiny eggs!  We had a go at making our own caterpillars and butterflies in many different ways. Such as with tissue paper, pegs and sticks!

In preparation for our assembly, we have been busy learning our lines and songs. Remember the assembly is on 8th of May at 9.00am, keep learning or reminding your child of their words.

Year 1

We have had another very busy two weeks in Year 1.

We have completed our letter writing unit using the book Paddington's Post as inspiration for our own letters to Year 2 where we asked them some of the questions we had about what life is like in Year 2.

In Maths we have been practising the concept of multiplication and division and using our skills to solve everyday problems.

The children thoroughly enjoyed our History topic on the lives of significant people. In this unit we learnt about four astronauts and the impact they had. We rounded off the unit with our astronaut training day. A highlight was launching our own rocket on the school field!

This week we have started our next Computing unit where the children will learn the basics of Scratch Junior programming. We will look forward to showing you some of our creations at Green Lanes is Great evening after half-term.

As we are leading up to the Phonics screening check after half-term please do remember to change reading books each Monday morning, and please look at the words which are sent home every Friday and encourage your child to read them during the week at home to help them build confidence.

Year 2

Year 2 have finished writing their fantastic instructions using imperative verbs, conjunctions, adjectives and more.

We are now excited about starting our new book 'The Lost Homework' which will support us in writing a narrative about a personal experience 'The Lost...'.

In Science we are learning more about Plants including the difference between seeds and bulbs.

For Maths, we have been continuing to develop our multiplication skills, practising times tables for our weekly times tables grid on a Monday afternoon and using arrays and repeated addition to help us develop our understanding.

Year 3

Year 3 have had a busy couple of weeks.

We had a brilliant time at Bisi Badminton and the children showed their determination at trying new things!

Our Maths has continued to focus on fractions where we have begun to learn about how to add them.

In our English we have finished our speeches and have started our own calligrams!

This week we will be finishing our History topic on the Romans, which the children have found super interesting!

Year 4

We are so pleased to hear that the children enjoyed their time at Tolmers Activity Centre. Lots of children conquered their fears - whether it was heights, being in a new space or sleeping away from home, all children did extremely well. We were most impressed with how kind they were towards one another and offering advice and support to those who needed it. You should be very proud of yourselves Year 4.

In English, we have now published our persuasive letters using the correct format and included a range of persuasive features. We are moving on to writing a non-chronological report about the importance of play.

In Maths, we have been having a go at long division. The children have shown excellent focus, as we made our way through the different steps of long division. We will continue to practice long division this week and transfer these skills when learning how to use short division.

Finally, In Science we have started our new unit about electricity, and the children are already showing lots of enthusiasm as they begin to investigate this topic.

Year 5

Our Year 5s have got off to a good start to the Summer Term, and we have lots to report about our learning so far.

In English, we have begun learning about the features of print, radio and video/TV adverts in preparation for our Advertising Campaign at the end of this half term; thank you to those of you who brought in copies of adverts to school. The Advertising Campaign will involve designing and marketing a 'problem-solving' product of their choice. Their final pitch will be to a panel of 'dragons' who will evaluate how well the teams have worked together and how successfully they have marketed/advertised their product. The pitch will be a new concept for our children but they will have already come across designing a product in D&T lessons.

In Maths lessons, we have been consolidating our understanding of fractions. This has included multiplying whole numbers (integers) by fractions and representing this pictorially. The children have also been exploring this concept using concrete resources such as cubes, dienes and Cuisenaire rods. Learning how to represent their work pictorially (drawing bar models, arrays and pie charts) will help the children to represent and explain their answers during assessments.

In Art lessons, we explored an array of sculptures inspired by the famous sculptor Barbara Hepworth. Our pupils made tissue paper cups using plastic cups, tissue paper and PVA blue; they also used two different kinds of clay to create a decorative slab; finally, they created coil pots using air dry clay. The children demonstrated excellent team work and imaginative skills during the creative process.

As part of our PE curriculum and golf tournament, our Year 5s visited Brocket Hall Estate where they got the opportunity to showcase their golf skills on the course and the driving range. The trip was thoroughly enjoyed by all and our children were model representatives of Green Lanes Primary School.

See you all in the next edition of our newsletter!

Year 6

As we approach SATs week, Year 6 have been doing lots of preparation to ensure they feel confident and calm on the day. We are so very proud of them all and thank-you for all of the home support in doing their copious amounts of homework!

We will be talking to the children on Friday afternoon about some tips and tricks to keep a healthy body and brain over the weekend and throughout next week. Such as: eating nutritious foods, drinking a good amount of water, exercising, sleeping well and doing mindfulness activities like grounding and drawing.

Please encourage rest over the weekend and throughout next week, we all need to recuperate after using our brains so hard!
