The last two weeks of school have been wonderful.  Thank you for your organisation and getting your children ready to start at Green Lanes.  We are extremely proud of how well all the children have settled in. 

Please ensure that all jumpers and shoes are clearly labelled with your child’s name, as they will be taken off during the day.  This would help us greatly in ensuring that all shoes can be easily returned to their owner. 

Please also remember to send in your family photos - either place them in your child’s bag or email them to the office.  We look forward to working with your children throughout the year.

We are so proud of how Year 1 have settled this week. 

We have started our phonics lessons and will be revisiting previous learning and then start our phase 5 sounds in two weeks time.

In Maths we have talked about positional language.

In English our text is Someone like you and we have been exploring labels and have had a go at labelling body parts. 

In Art we have looked at pencil movements and the children have explored making lots of different marks. 

Due to a timetabling issue our PE days are now Monday and Thursday.

Please make sure your child brings back their reading and library books to school on Monday. 

 

Year 2 have settled beautifully into their new classes, and we have had a very exciting week so far!

In English, we have started our new book, The Frog and the Stranger, and have been exploring different character traits.

In Maths, we have been representing different numbers using a range of resources and developing our understanding of numbers up to 100.

We have also been getting creative in Art, exploring mark making using a variety of different media in our sketchbooks. 

It has been a fantastic start to the year, and we are looking forward to all the learning still to come!

 

Welcome to a new school year at Green Lanes Primary School! We are excited to start the term and look forward to working together to support your child’s learning and well-being. Here’s what we’ve been up to during our first week back:

Maths - This week, we’ve been exploring place value and comparing numbers up to millions. Pupils have enjoyed using practical resources and interactive games to deepen their understanding of large numbers. Ask your child to show you how they can read and order numbers up to 1,000,000!

How you can help at home:
- Challenge your child to spot large numbers in newspapers, books or online.
- Ask them to compare two big numbers – which is larger? How do they know?

English - Our English lessons are all about monsters and mythical creatures this term. We’ve been reading stories and researching legends to inspire our writing. This week, we started planning and drafting a non-chronological report about an imaginary creature.

Ask your child:
- What creature are they writing about?
- What interesting facts have they invented?

Art - In art, pupils are getting creative with charcoal drawing and painting. We are learning about subtractive techniques – using erasers and tools to create highlights and textures by removing charcoal from the paper. The children have produced some fantastic mythical creature artwork already!

Why not try:

Encouraging your child to experiment with charcoal or pencil shading at home.

PE - This term, our focus in PE is football. Pupils have started practising their dribbling, passing, and teamwork skills. Please ensure your child has their PE kit in school every Thursday and Friday.

 

It has been a fantastic start in Year 6, and the children have settled in brilliantly.  They have shown great maturity, flexibility and a positive attitude as they have embraced our busy Year 6 timetable.

In English, we have begun our unit Night of the Gargoyles.  The children will be working towards writing an eerie narrative about a creature that comes alive at night – we are looking forward to seeing their imaginative ideas develop.

In Maths, the children are starting strongly with place value and arithmetic during our early morning work.

In Topic, we are learning all about World War II, including the Battle of Britain, the Blitz, and the countries involved.

Homework will begin next week, and further information will be emailed to parents and carers soon. 

We are looking forward to a wonderful year ahead!

 

We are delighted to share that the children have returned to school really well and are already settling back into class routines with confidence and positivity.  It has been lovely to see them re-engaging with learning, reconnecting with their friends and showing such a positive attitude towards the start of the term.

As part of our Inclusion Team support, there are a range of additional systems in place to help children settle, succeed and feel secure in school.  These may include:

• tailored in-class support
• small-group interventions
• additional check-ins throughout the day
• support with organisation, transitions and routines
• adapted scaffolding to help children access learning confidently

We are currently allowing two weeks for these systems to settle so that the children can become familiar with expectations and routines.  This gives us a valuable opportunity to observe how they are responding and to ensure the support in place is working well for each child.

The survey explores how the cost of living is affecting households, the challenges people face accessing food, and how food support services can be improved.  The feedback collected will help inform future decisions about local food support across Hertfordshire.
