Headteacher's update

Welcome back to the new term at Green Lanes Primary and our new look newsletter and website.

The children have come back to school brilliantly. They are calm and beautifully behaved for the new term. Our whole school focus is 'Calm Classrooms' and everyone has been finding out about the right noise levels for learning. Ask your child to tell you about the 1-Silent snail, 2-Whisper whale, 3-Partner parrot and 4- Loud and proud lion. We know that a quiet classroom helps everyone focus.

We are working with educational instagrammer Jen Foster on a pilot of whole school journaling. This is based on the research that if we train the brain to focus and be mindful, then learning, wellbeing and behaviour is better. Already, children are telling us that the journaling parts of their day are their favourite.

Next week we have our 'open classrooms' this is a chance for your child to show you their classroom and for you to meet their class teachers. This is not a consultation but a hello and welcome to the classroom. Please click on this link to book your slot.

The GLSA will have their first event today as we welcome Riley and Kusama parents and children to the teddy bears picnic. I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of our new families who are joining us. Look out for details on upcoming GLSA events and AGM - all are welcome.

On Monday we will be launching our new Instagram and Facebook pages- these are intended as a way to keep you up to date on all the great things that we do at the school.

Why not pop along to our next parent cafe on Wednesday 18th September - meet the team - you can meet with myself, Claire Gibbins our deputy, Amy Russell our INCO and Maria Panter our family worker. The office team will also be available to help you if you are having difficulties with any apps or not sure of which apps you should have.

Foundation Stage

The children have had a fantastic start to Green Lanes and we are really proud of how well they have settled in. Please can you check that your child's shoes are clearly named. The children do take them off during the day and it would help us enormously if all of the shoes can easily be reunited with their owner! Thank you for your support with this. We look forward to working with your children throughout the year and if you have any questions or concerns, please just ask.

Year 1

Year 1 have had a lovey time settling in to their new classes and have enjoyed practising their new routines. In our topic sessions the children have loved learning about different drawing techniques and applying them when drawing Fizzy! In our English lessons the children have begun to show their amazing writing skills and in our maths they have practised prepositional language. Please make sure all jumpers and coats are named. If you haven’t done so already we would love a family picture to add to our class photos!

Year 2

Year 2 have had a great start to the year. They have all settled into the new routines really well and have been practising our whole school focus of 'Calm Classrooms'. The expectations are higher in year 2 but we have already seen some fantastic work with sentence composition in writing and numbers to 100 in maths. We have started our new Art topic exploring mark making and have been creating our own games in PE.

Year 3

Year 3 are off to a great start! We have been busy exploring mark making and painting techniques within our Art lessons and showed off what we have learnt with a final piece depicting the fictional monster 'the hippocrump'. The children have been excited to start their French lessons and began sharing what they already know about the country and language. We have began our Science topic learning about Rocks, Soil and Fossils and have sent out a letter detailing our upcoming trips to support our learning.

Year 4

We are so proud of how calmly the children have transitioned into their new Year 4 classrooms. It’s been fantastic to see them adapt to their surroundings and the new routines of the KS2 corridor. In Maths, they have revisited place value and in English, they have revised some key grammar around word class that will help them with their writing projects throughout this term. The children have also explored shape and form in our afternoon Art lessons, focussing on contours, detail and negative space. Our new journaling books are a big hit; children have been able to use time throughout the day to record key events and express their feelings. Finally, well done to everyone on a great first swimming session!

Year 5

Year 5 have settled in really well coming into a new year group with new surroundings and new expectations. We have been impressed with how they have approached everything that they have done so far and have already been showing some good resilience and maturity towards their learning. We have so far been understanding place value in Maths and how we can compare numbers effectively. In English we have started our class book, learning about the explorer Shackleton. The children have been producing some really lovely watercolour pictures in our Art sessions as well, creating unique landscapes based on the artist that we have been looking at.

Year 6

We are so impressed with how the children have started the new term! They have been working so hard and getting used to the responsibilities and expectations that come with being in year 6. We have already started lots of new topics such as; writing autobiographies in English, learning about WWII in history, singing war and peace songs in music and football skills in PE. All of this and we have only been back a week and a half!

On Monday we have Mrs Moxham coming from Stanborough to do some sports leadership training with the children and the whole year group are also taking part in a sporting activity next Wednesday afternoon. Children will therefore need to be in PE kits on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday next week but not on Tuesday. We are looking forward to a busy week of sport!

A reminder: Secondary School online applications are open. View the moving on leaflet here.

Banksy news

What's new in Banksy?

Children are excited to explore and use the new sensory room we have added to Banksy, as a place to support regulation and develop sensory diets for our children and young people - showing sensory-seeking or sensory-avoiding behaviours. Feel free to come and see it during the Open Classrooms next week.
