Issue 5: Friday 29th November 2024

Headteacher's update

We are closed tomorrow, Friday 29th November and Monday 2nd December. We will reopen Tuesday 3rd December. This is due to planned training and an occasional day.

Thank you to those of you that filled in the parent questionnaire. We will be analysing the results with our governing body to see what you like about the school and what you would like us to look at to improve. Early indications tell us that overwhelmingly, you would recommend the school and your child is happy here.

We have a special visit and workshop from ‘Electric umbrella’ a community learning disabled music group who believe in empowering the community through music. They will be running a singing workshop for our Year 4s and in true community spirit you are invited to join. Spaces are limited, so if you want to pop along Thursday 5th December 2-3pm then please let us know by completing the form here.

It is definitely starting to look a little bit like Christmas at Green Lanes as we move into December. We even had some very naughty elves up to mischief in Year 1. If you haven’t seen what they have been up to then just follow our Instagram to see what they might be doing next as we have more news about what we are doing at the school.

This year we are sending home Christmas message cards for every child to create a card for their class. This will save you having to write multiple cards to send into school and also save the planet a bit this Christmas.

We are looking forward to the children’s Christmas singing and signing performances which take place during week commencing 9th December, it would be great if your child could look Christmassy with a Christmas hat or other accessory for the event. All performances take place in the main hall - please enter via the main hall doors.

Enjoy the long weekend and we look forward to seeing you Tuesday 3rd December.

Foundation Stage

In Foundation Stage, we have been learning all about our Class Artists (Riley and Kusama) and the children have completed some lovely pieces of artwork in the style of their class artist. We enjoyed reading 'Luna Loves Art', about a child who goes on a school trip to an art gallery and the children discussed which artwork they liked best and why.

This week we have been learning about sentence structure and trying to order words to make our own sentences, making sure it has a capital letter, a full stop and that it makes sense.

Year 1

Year 1 have had a busy couple of weeks and have worked hard. The children loved reading Rapunzel in our reading lessons and enjoyed predicting what they thought would happen next. Our maths lessons introduced teen numbers and focused on finding 10 and some more. The children have learnt even more about animals and how we can compare them in our topic lessons. We have had a visit from cheeky elves who have finally returned our Christmas decorations, the children wrote wonderful letters to them!

As it is getting colder please make sure any hats, gloves, scarves and coats have names in!

Year 2

Year 2 has been busy again this week.

On Tuesday we went on our geography walk around the local area. We identified lots of human and physical features. We talked about allotments, farms, apartments and factories.  We observed the road signs and different plant types. We also had lots of fun spotting our own houses!

In maths, we have been adding and subtracting using our 100 grids crossing 10s.

In writing we have been learning about past tense verbs and third person pronouns, which we will be using to help us retell the story of 'Where the Wild Things Are.'

Year 3

Year 3 have been continuing their topic of The Stone Age and learning about the differences between the Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic ages in more detail. How nomads slowly changed from hunter/gathers and began farming, domesticating animals and building communities.

We have really focused on team work in our recent PE lessons, in particular handball, which we are developing our sense of using open space to pass and move as a team. In French, we are continuing to learn the names of a range of different animals and the correct pronunciation.

Year 4

We have really enjoyed being scientists in Year 4 this week, looking closely at the three States of Matter: solids, liquids and gasses. We completed some interesting experiments to test melting points and the amount of water displaced by an object's volume (not weight) using cheese and butter!

In Reading Practice we are nearly at the end of our adventure story about a girl who tries to rescue her friend by stealing an elephant. The plot and setting of this story will provide excellent inspiration for the children over the next few weeks as they will be learning about all the devices needed to write an exciting adventure story of their own.

In maths, the children have recapped on repeated addition and counting in multiples. They have also maintained excellent focus during their times table lessons and are working hard on strategies to help them progress with their 144 grids.

Year 5

We have had an exciting week in Year 5! Greek Day was a success - it was lovely seeing everyone in their fantastic costumes. We learnt how the Greeks performed plays, as well as how to compete in an Ancient Greek Olympics. We even tried some Ancient Greek style dancing, and reviewed some Greek food.

As well as this, we have been looking at how to write Haikus and Cinquains in our poetry for English, focusing on rhyme and alliteration. Lastly, we have been focusing on formal written method for addition and subtraction.

Year 6

This week, year 6 have had the excitement of going to the WWII bunker inside Hatfield police station! It was a great trip where they learnt a lot about local history and even about the work that the police do in this area. Did you know that Leavesden Aircraft Factory is now the Harry Potter Studios? Some of the most famous WWII planes were built there, such as the Mosquito!

Inside the classroom, the children have been continuing their learning about the circulatory system in science. They have learnt about the components of the blood and how the heart and lungs work. There have been some great discussions during these lessons about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and also why all public places should have access to a defibrillator. We are looking forward to continuing this next week and using our knowledge to write an explanatory text in English. We hope you enjoy your four-day weekend!

Inclusion (Banksy)

Our Banksy Council have been meeting to discuss ways in which to make things better at Green Lanes. They gathered suggestions from their peers and some ideas that were brought to the table included calm areas at lunchtime, brain training games in calm corners, individual learning pods in classrooms etc. We will update you further in our next newsletter.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Changes to dinner payments (debts)

For pupils in Years 3 to 6 who are not eligible to receive Free School Meals.

We are writing to inform you of some important changes to the way we manage school dinner debts.

Hertfordshire Catering Limited, our provider, require payment in advance. However, as a school, we have not enforced this in the past and have been fair in allowing parents to pay after meals are taken.

Unfortunately, due to the rise in outstanding dinner money, we have made the decision to pass dinner debts over to our provider - this is the same process that all School Grid schools follow.

What does this mean?

This means that unless school meals are paid for in advance, you and the school will be unable to place a lunch order if there is no credit on the account. You will therefore be required to send your child in with a packed lunch.

These changes will come into effect from Monday 24th February 2025. This will give you some time to settle any outstanding debt on your child's dinner account. If you wish to discuss your account with us, please contact the School Office.

You may be eligible for Free School Meals if you meet certain criteria. To check your eligibility go to https://www.hertfordshire.gov.uk/services/schools-and-education/at-school/free-school-meals/free-school-meals.aspx
