Headteacher's update

Dear Parent/Carer,

This is your fortnightly newsletter giving you updates and telling you what is happening at Green Lanes Primary School.

Last week we celebrated World Book Day with a staged break in and clues left by book characters. We even had the help of our local police officers who took the children’s statements. It was a great day and really wowed our children’s interest in books. Thank you to those of you who also donated a book to your child’s classroom.

We are starting our weekly trips to the local library. To go on this trip, which will be once every half-term, your child just needs to be a member and have their library card.

We are really proud of our children’s sporting achievements, with both our boys and girls getting to Indoor Athletics area finals and the girls going on to county finals. We are really proud of them and well done!

We have already taken part in and have won a variety of sports tournaments already this academic year and last week our year 5 dancers performed at the Campus West theatre.

Thank you so much for your donations, and please remember us if you are donating toys or kitchen items. With the weather turning warmer, we are looking for any dress-up costumes that you may no longer need. Please leave donations at the main entrance.

Our lost property will be moving to outside Moore class on the infant playground. If your child has lost an item please look through our items. Please know if it is named, we will always get it back to you. Please regularly name your child’s items.

We will be sadly saying goodbye to some members of staff this term. I know you will join me in thanking them and wishing them all the best. Leaving are Mrs Harcombe our office manager, Mr Hoffman Y5 teacher, Mrs Coan Riley teacher and Mrs Stevens one of our inclusion and lunchtime leads. We are welcoming to the team Miss Kun our new Riley class teacher.

Warm regards,

Michele Johnson

Foundation Stage

In Foundation we are learning about People Who Help Us. Last week we talked about dentists and the importance of looking after our teeth. The children shared their experiences of visiting the dentist and we talked about how and when to brush our teeth. This week we have been focusing on fire fighters. We watched a video that Hatfield Fire Service made for the children, which explains their role and the equipment they use. If you work in one of the emergency/ caring services (e.g. doctor, vet, dentist, police etc.) and you would be willing to come in to talk to the children about what you do, please let one of us know. We would love to hear from you and the children really enjoy visitors and making real world connections.

Year 1

Year 1 have had another busy two weeks. We have finished our recounts in English where we have focused on using the past tense. The children are looking forward to showing you their work in our upcoming book look sessions.

In Maths we have moved onto measures and this week are exploring coins. Perry Class in D&T have started our unit on sewing and will be designing and sewing our own hand warmers. Kahlo Class have been exploring Materials and making structures. They will be designing and making their own house using toasted bread and icing sugar as cement. The classes will swap next week.

We have continued to learn new phase 5 sounds this week. We will send home the phonics summary sheet today for you to read through with your child over the weekend.

Year 2

It has been another busy couple of weeks for Year 2. We have now completed our assessment weeks and we would like to say how proud we are of all of you for completing your 'quizzes' with maturity and enthusiasm. You were all super stars!! On top of our quizzes we have been super busy in other areas of the curriculum. In Art we have completed our painting module and learnt about our focus artist Wassily Kandinsky.  We spent our time focussing on concentric shapes (ask us what this means) as well as mixing primary colours to make secondary colours - it was like magic! We finished the module responding to a piece of music through our painting skills. In History, we have begun our module on 'Flight' which concentrates on the different ways in which humans have tried to fly.  In English we have concluded our 'Non-chronological Reports' and have looked at how we all set them out differently to each other. In maths, we have been continuing using part, part whole models and identifying the parts and whole in the models.

Year 3

Year 3 have been challenging themselves within our maths lessons learning the steps required for completing formal subtraction with exchanging. Using different resources has helped us visualise the exchanging between the tens and hundreds and how it makes it easier for us to solve. We are excited to be starting a new Geography topic on the UK. This includes learning about countries, capital cities along with natural and man made features.

Year 4

In Year 4 this week we have been working really hard on our understanding of fractions, by exploring equivalent fractions. In Picasso Class, pupils have even used their own actions to help us all remember our mathematical rules, when it comes to checking if two fractions are equivalent or not - ask them to show you at home! The Science topic was on food chains, and examining how different species consume different food sources and why. Maybe ask your child to give you some examples of a powerful predator? In English, we have just begun our new unit on adventure stories, focusing on how we punctuate dialogue in our writing. Class adults are excited to see what fantastical and inventive stories the children are going to come up with.

Year 5

Dear Parents,

Here’s a glimpse into what our students have been up to:

Assessment Success:
We are pleased to inform you that our recent assessments have been completed, and we are incredibly proud of the hard work and dedication our students have shown. They did exceptionally well, and we want to extend a big congratulations to all the kids for their efforts and achievements!

English - Biography Reading:
In English, our students have been reading and learning about the fascinating lives of influential figures. Currently, we are diving into the biography of Buzz Aldrin, one of the legendary astronauts who helped make history with the Apollo 11 mission. The kids have been captivated by his journey to the moon, and we’ve also been exploring the lives of other NASA astronauts, which has sparked many interesting discussions in class.

Math - Area & Measurement:
In our math lessons, students have been working hard on understanding area and measurement. They are learning how to measure in square centimetres, and we’ve been applying this knowledge in creative ways.

Science - Earth & Space:
In science, our focus has been on the fascinating topics of Earth, space, the moon, and planets. Students have been exploring how the Earth and the moon interact, and learning about the various planets in our solar system. We’re excited to continue delving deeper into these topics as the children's curiosity grows!

Students have also been creating clay pots and paper mache sculptures.

Year 6

Year 6 have had an incredibly busy couple of weeks! Last week, Year 6 demonstrated remarkable determination and resilience during assessment week. Their positive attitudes and growing confidence were truly inspiring, and we're delighted to see their hard work paying off.  During art we have been focusing on printmaking and textiles. The children have really enjoyed this unit, especially learning new skills and techniques. They have created a range of one-point perspective drawings and experimented with three-colour reduction prints and over the next week they are looking forward to trying batik. We have been so impressed with their creativity during this unit.

Easter Fun

Join your local library today!

To celebrate World Book Day, not only would we like the children to come dressed up as their favourite book character, we would also like them to join their local library.

We are planning a trip to the library, in small groups, and in order to visit,  parents will need to sign up. So that we know your child is registered, please complete the consent form on Arbor (under Arbor Trips). Once we know your child is registered with their library, we will arrange for them to participate in one of the trips. We will send further details of the trips once confirmed.
