Headteacher's update

Dear Parents/Carers,

Thank you everyone that came to our sports day last Friday. It was a great event with a lovely atmosphere, as children and parents cheered on all the competitors.

The overall winner of sports day was Fir. Well done to everyone involved!

We can’t wait to see you this Sunday 29th June 11-3pm at our GLSA Summer Fair. Please let friends and family know about this community event. This year there will be live music as well as stalls, inflatables and, of course, the Green Lanes has Talent winners.

Uniform change in September

In the new academic year (September 2025/26), we will be giving you the option of a formal school uniform or an active-wear uniform. The active wear uniform consists of:

Black leggings, joggers or shorts

White polo shirt

Green sweatshirt, cardigan or jumper

Black trainers (black soles)

Which can be worn to school every day, not just on PE days.

Please note items should not have coloured logos or stripes apart from the school logo. This is to avoid unnecessary pressure to purchase branded items. Trainers should be plain black with black soles.

This is to support our active play and daily run a mile. You can, of course, continue to choose the formal uniform as an option too.

We will also be asking you to leave wellies, waterproof trousers and jackets in school as well. We will be organising an exchange system to help with this as we know children rapidly grow throughout the year.

We will be asking you to provide your child with stationery in Years 2-6 from September. With increasing costs and smaller budgets, we have had to make this difficult decision. We, of course, will continue to support those families on lower incomes or those entitled to benefit related free school meals, or those who have forgotten to bring their stationery. Stationery list:

Soft pencil case

HB pencil

Sharpener

Rubber

Blue rollerball/Biro

Glue stick

Felt tips

Coloured pencils

Highlighters Green & pink

We will provide rulers and all other stationery. If you are on a low income, such as universal credit or benefit free school meals, we will provide your child with the above.

Next Friday 4th July I will be letting you know which class and teacher your child will be going to in September. They will then get a chance to spend the morning of Thursday 10th July with them.

Warm regards,

Michele Johnson

Foundation Stage

This week in Foundation we have been focussing on the sea and the creatures who live there. The children loved reading the book "Commotion in the Ocean" and enjoyed drawing and writing about their favourite sea creature. We have also been experimenting with mixed media by painting 'wax resist' under the sea pictures. Next week the children will have the opportunity to play host to our new cohort and show them all the things they have enjoyed about being in Reception this year.

Year 1

Year 1 have worked super hard for the last 2 weeks. The children loved learning about different bug life cycles and then writing their own in our English lessons. In our maths lessons we have looked at halves and quarters of shapes as well as practising time again. Our topic lessons looked at art, where the children created fabulous self-portraits as well as looking at grouping data in computing. Please make sure your child has a named water bottle and hat in school as the weather is warming up.

Year 2

What a great couple of weeks we have had in Year 2. We had a lovely, but very hot, walk to the Bunker in Hatfield where we consolidated some of our History learning about Geoffrey De Havilland. We had a great time and learnt more about what the Police get up to on a day-to-day basis. We even got to hear the war siren!

In English, we have continued with our book, Super Joe Does NOT Do Cuddles, and we have started to write about our own Superheroes and Villains.  We have been focussing on expanded noun phrases, using apostrophes for contraction, and editing and challenging our own work.  We have all worked really hard, and we are extremely proud of our writing! In Maths, we have been concentrating on geometry and learning about the properties of 2D and 3D shapes.

Lastly, thank you to all the parents who were able to come to our Class Assembly this morning. We hope that you enjoyed it as much as we did!

Year 3

Year 3 have had an action-packed few weeks. Both classes enjoyed their trips to the Roman Museum at Verulamium. We learnt about different artefacts and the Roman way of life. We were also able to see a range of real Roman mosaics and coins that were uncovered nearby. It has been a practical Maths week focusing on Geometry. We have enjoyed using angle eaters to measure angles of different objects as well as creating 2d and 3d shapes.

Year 4

Year 4 have been learning all about the world's environmental regions in their Geography unit this week – the children have learnt the difference between climate and weather and used Google Earth on their Chromebooks to research continents and their climate zones.

In English we have made a great start with our news reports. The children have all thought about the organisational features a good news report needs and how to present their own work when writing up their ideas.

In our maths lessons we have looked at statistics and how data can be recorded and presented in different ways (tables, bar charts, line graphs etc.), depending on what the information is being used for. We have learnt about the x- and y- axes and the relationship between variables.

Finally, all the children had lots of fun at the Electric Umbrella event in the Cathedral in St Albans on Thursday and at their multi-sports event at Stanborough on Friday. What a busy week - well done Year 4!

Year 5

English – Biographies: Rosalind Franklin and Marie Curie
This week, we explored the lives and achievements of two incredible scientists: Rosalind Franklin and Marie Curie. The children read short biographies, identified key facts, and practised writing their own mini-biographies. We discussed the impact these women had on science and how determination and curiosity can lead to great discoveries.

Maths – Telling Time and Calculating Time
In Maths, we focused on telling the time using both analogue and digital clocks. The children also learnt how to calculate time intervals, solving problems like 'How long until lunch?' or 'What time will it be in 45 minutes'. Please continue practising this at home to build confidence.

Reading Practice – 'Five Children and It'
Our class text is the classic story Five Children and It by E. Nesbit. We’ve been working on reading with expression and improving comprehension. Ask your child about the magical creature they met in the story and what wishes the children made!

Geography – Reading 4 and 6 Figure Grid References
In Geography, we’ve been mastering the skill of map reading using 4-figure and 6-figure grid references. The children enjoyed finding hidden 'treasures' on maps and using coordinates to describe locations. A fun and practical way to build spatial awareness!

Thank You – Sports Day
A huge thank you to everyone who came along to support our Sports Day. It was a day full of energy, cheering, and smiling faces. The children showed great sportsmanship and had so much fun taking part in the races and games. Well done to everyone who participated!

Year 6

Year 6 have continued to work incredibly hard over the last couple of weeks. In English, pupils have finished and published their imaginative stories under the theme ‘Things That Go Bump in the Night’. We have been truly impressed by the creativity and quality of their writing.

In PSHE, we’ve been exploring our ‘Money Matters’ topic. Pupils have put their learning into practice during maths lessons, where they have enjoyed budgeting and designing their very own theme parks. It was fantastic to see such enthusiasm and teamwork as they managed their budgets and brought their creative ideas to life.

A special thank you to all our Year 6 pupils who took on important roles as house captains and sports leaders during Sports Day. Your positive attitude, excellent behaviour, and sportsmanship made us very proud.

We’re now looking forward to our exciting Food and Farming trip next week at the Herts County Showground – a great opportunity to learn more about where our food comes from and life on the farm!

Join your local library today!

To celebrate World Book Day, not only would we like the children to come dressed up as their favourite book character, we would also like them to join their local library.

We are planning a trip to the library, in small groups, and in order to visit,  parents will need to sign up. So that we know your child is registered, please complete the consent form on Arbor (under Arbor Trips). Once we know your child is registered with their library, we will arrange for them to participate in one of the trips. We will send further details of the trips once confirmed.
