Sports Newsletter (Summer Term) - 17th July 2025

Welcome to the Sports Newsletter!

Hello everyone,

We’re delighted to share highlights from our sporting activities and achievements at Green Lanes Primary School since June. Our pupils continue to impress us with their teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship. Thank you to all families and staff for your ongoing support especially with transport to the events - these successes wouldn’t be possible without you!

Year 6 Rounders Tournament at Monks Walk

Twelve children from across Year 6 took part in an exciting rounders tournament at Monks Walk, competing against ten schools from across Welwyn and Hatfield. Despite the heat, the team showed brilliant teamwork and put their rounders club skills to the test. We’re so proud of their perseverance and competitive spirit!

Year 4 Golf Experience at Brocket Hall

As part of our new partnership with Brocket Hall Golf Club, all Year 4 girls were invited to take part in a special golf session at the academy. Highlights included:

  • Expert coaching: The girls were instructed by top coaches and grew in confidence.
  • Cutting-edge technology: Everyone enjoyed trying out the driving range’s state-of-the-art equipment.
  • Inspiring role model: The group met a former Green Lanes pupil who is now a golf pro—our pupils asked lots of fantastic questions! It was a memorable afternoon and wonderful to see so much enthusiasm for golf.

Sports Day Success!

Sports Day was a huge success this year, with all children showing fantastic enthusiasm and support for their teams. A special thank you goes to our house captains and sports leaders, who helped the day run smoothly by organising equipment and even running activities. Congratulations to our house winners:

  • Ash: Year 3 and 4 champions
  • Fir: Foundation, Key Stage 1, and Year 5 & 6 champions, and overall winners for the day!

 District Sports at Gosling Stadium

Green Lanes competed in a range of athletics events against nine other local schools. Our team’s dedication and encouragement for one another created a brilliant atmosphere. This was our best performance in recent years, finishing in the top three and missing second place by just two points! A huge well done to our gold medal winners:

Gold Medal Winners:

  • Marvellous – 600m
  • Fisola – Year 5 girls beanbag
  • Ama – Year 5 girls sprint
  • Isaiah, Marvellous, Woody & Toby – Year 5 boys relay

  • Olivia – Girls long jump

Year 4 Multi-Sports at Stanborough

Year 4 enjoyed a whole-class sports event at Stanborough, taking part in indoor athletics, rapid-fire cricket, archery, and handball. The event was run by Stanborough’s sports leaders and was a hit with everyone—so much so, the children didn’t want to leave!

Year 5 Olympic Legacy Event

Our Year 5 pupils attended the Olympic Legacy event at Gosling Stadium, joining schools from across Welwyn and Hatfield. Despite some wet weather, spirits were high as the children took part in archery, handball, and the incredibly popular Tug of War. Racing against the police speed camera was a definite highlight!

Celebrating Our Sporting Stars

Congratulations to Harvey, Jayden, Harley and Andre (Year 4) and Jackson (Year 3), who play for Birchwood Football Club’s team, The Warriors. They recently won their football tournament—well done!
