Green Lanes School Newsletter

Issue 11: Thursday 5th March 2026

Dear Parents and Carers,

We have had a busy fortnight with research projects, parent cafes and sporting events. This newsletter will give you a round-up of all of our news.

New look homework - we are now moving to a no-tech and school day only approach to homework in practice books which you will be given.

This will look like 4 short tasks Monday to Friday rather than weekly homework tasks. The tasks should be something your child can do, they will know it as a practice task, such as spelling, handwriting or tables.

It should be completed daily, their practice book brought into school daily, and will be checked (not marked) to see how they found it.  This enables you to not have to think about homework at the weekend.

Outcomes of the trial year groups demonstrated better uptake and attitudes to homework, as well as an improvement in key skills.

This Friday 6th March - World Book Week Dress-Up Day

  • Theme: "Find Me in a Book"
  • Dress as a favourite book character (fiction or non-fiction) OR your favourite word
  • Photo competition: Share a photo of your child reading in an unusual place to win a reading session with Fizzy, our school dog! Just post a photo in your child's Google classroom before Monday 9th March

Foundation Stage

This week in Foundation we have been learning all about Pancake Day and the different ways this is celebrated around the world.  We have enjoyed reading our book, 'Mr Wolf's Pancakes' and the children have made their own pancakes in the mud kitchen and in the role-play house.  We even got to eat real pancakes during our topic Monday’s sessions!

On Friday we will be celebrating World Book Day!  Don't forget to use your book token to pick up your free book from any participating shop.

Next week will be Science week!  We have planned to do some exciting experiments focussed on chemical reactions.  For example, what happens when you mix vinegar and baking soda!  We are very excited to see the children’s reactions to these experiments and their questioning of what will happen next.  We will be sure to take photos which you can see during the Book Looks on 10th to 13th of March.

Year 1

We are looking forward to celebrating World Book day tomorrow. We will have a guess that book cover quiz along with drawing our favourite book covers.

In Phonics, we have begun our Phonics Screening revision. We will be revisiting all of the sounds we have learnt so far. I will continue to send home the summary sheet on a Friday.

We have begun a Maths unit on problem solving - we will be sending home some examples in the homework book this week.

Our CUSP topic this week was programming. We have used the Bee Bots and written our own algorithms to make them dance along to a song.

Year 2

This week in Year 2 we have been reading Julian Is a Mermaid in English. We have been thinking about the characters and using our imagination to write sentences inspired by the story. The children have been working on including capital letters and full stops in their writing.

In Maths, we have continued practising our times tables and focusing on answering questions with increasing confidence.

In Design and Technology, we have been making our cars. The children have been learning how to use saws and glue guns safely and carefully as they begin to assemble their designs.

Year 3

Year 3 have had a fantastic return after half-term.

The children have loved beginning to write their own setting descriptions in our English lessons. They have shown how imaginative they are!

Our maths lessons have focused on word problems and using both addition and subtraction strategies to find the answer.

In our topic lessons, the children enjoyed learning about forces and magnets and had lots of brilliant questions about them.

A reminder that our trips are on the 10th and 17th of March. If you have any questions regarding these or would like to be a parent helper, please speak to either Mrs King or Mrs Hoy!

Year 4

So far this half term, Year 4 have been working incredibly hard across all areas of the curriculum and we are very proud of their enthusiasm and creativity!

In English, the children have successfully completed their exciting travel leaflets, using persuasive language and descriptive techniques to encourage readers to visit their dream locations. We are now beginning a new unit exploring what makes a narrative story entertaining and magical. The children will be looking closely at story features such as character, setting, description, and suspense as they prepare to create their own imaginative stories.

In Maths, we are focusing on fractions, developing our understanding of scaling fractions and finding fractions of quantities. The children are using practical resources and problem-solving activities to build confidence and deepen their understanding of how to solve problems using fractions.

During our afternoon sessions, Year 4 has been travelling back in time to learn all about the Vikings. We have explored their journeys to Britain, the reasons behind Viking invasions, and how they eventually settled and influenced life in Britain. The children have enjoyed discovering fascinating facts about Viking life, culture, and legacy.

We look forward to sharing more of Year 4’s fantastic learning with you soon!

Year 5

Year 5 have begun Spring 2 fantastically, with lots of new learning and fresh and exciting challenges for the children!

In Maths, we have continued consolidating our knowledge of fractions. We have been practising the skill of finding equivalent fractions on a fraction wall and applying our multiplication and division knowledge to find equivalent fractions. Students have really impressed us with the array of equivalent fractions they could make! In Maths, we have also been comparing fractions and ordering them. We have also learnt how to simplify fractions by finding the highest common factors of numerators and denominators.

In English, we are learning how to write a descriptive recount based on our text The Water Tower by Gary Crew. The children are really intrigued by the text and have been able to identify the array of figurative language found in it. They have also enjoyed the plot and engaged enthusiastically in the content. It also left them asking many questions. This will help towards inspiring them to write their own descriptive recount at the end of the unit.

In Topic, we have been consolidating our learning of sustainability and climate change in Geography and about how we can work towards reducing our carbon footprint.

In D&T lessons, we have been practising our sewing skills in preparation for creating a durable and practical lunch box out of denim fabric. The stitches we have used are running stitch, back stitch and blanket stitch. The children have really found this unit enjoyable and we look forward to even more D&T lessons in the future!

Next week is Assessment Week, and we wish the children the best of luck!

Year 6

Our Year 6 pupils have been doing some brilliant work since returning from half-term. They have come back on top form - concentrating harder than ever. All of this hard work is paying off in their lessons.

In Maths, we have looked a little more at long division and now have moved on to shape (area and perimeter).

In English, we have been writing balanced arguments about topics we want to learn more about. For example; Should children under the age of 13 be allowed to play games online? or, Should children be allowed to wear a non-school uniform every day? Some passionate views have been discussed amongst a range of questions.

In the afternoons, we have been doing printing and perspective drawing in art. Perspective drawing proved to be rather difficult but we all persevered and were proud of our individual outcomes!

The ELSA Study - Screening for diabetes in school

LIMITED SPACES NOW AVAILABLE

BOOK YOUR SPACE TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT

Researchers at the University of Birmingham are conducting the ELSA study. The ELSA study is screening children, aged 3-13 years to find out their risk of getting type 1 diabetes. This is a simple finger stick blood test, you can do it at home or at your child’s school. We are offering the screening at your child’s school on Thursday 12th March 2026.

Children at high risk can be monitored and could enter research studies aiming to delay the start of type 1 diabetes. Every family who takes part in the ELSA study is helping us to understand more about type 1 diabetes.

If you would like to take part or to find out more information, please visit the ELSA website or scan the QR code on the above poster. If you have any questions, please contact the ELSA study team by email, phone or on their website.

Further information can be found here.
