Green Lanes School Newsletter

Issue 12: Thursday 19th March 2026

Dear Parents and Carers,

Diabetes Testing Trial Success
We're delighted to share that we've successfully completed the diabetes testing trial in partnership with the NHS and Birmingham University. We've been informed that Green Lanes Primary School had the largest primary school uptake they have experienced – a fantastic achievement! Thank you to all the families who took part. Your participation is helping to identify and prevent this condition, making a real difference to children's health.

Book Week Celebration
We recently enjoyed a wonderful Book Week where the children explored the exciting world of books through various activities and a special assembly. Thank you for sending in your 'unusual places to read' photos – they were brilliant and really captured the children's love of reading!

Science Week Adventures

Last week, we celebrated Science Week with lots of hands-on experiments. The children particularly enjoyed the challenge of making a flower from just paper – with no tape or glue allowed! It was fantastic to see their creativity and problem-solving skills in action.

Parent Cafe – Supporting Anxiety in Children

Our next Parent Cafe is this Friday, 20th March 2026, 9:00-9:30am in the School Library.
The session will focus on how we can support anxiety in children, including what anxiety looks like and practical ways to help. This will be led by Miss Russell, our Assistant Head/Inclusion Lead. No need to book, all parents and carers are welcome to attend.

Foundation Stage

Thank you to all the parents who came in to see their child's amazing writing books, it was lovely to see how proud they were to show you!

The next two weeks we will be exploring
People Who Help Us topic, discussing different job roles. It’s a wonderful topic as it provides an opportunity for children to make real-world connections and ask questions.

We will also be taking part in
Comic Relief this Friday; children are invited to wear pyjamas!  With just two weeks left of the spring term, we’re nearly at the end — how exciting!

Year 1

Year 1 thoroughly enjoyed our Science week activities last week.  We investigated growing grass pots, colour mixing, making raisins dance and finally we set up an experiment to see if we could make a bouncing egg. We are looking forward to testing this before the weekend.

In English we have finished our unit on Martha Maps It Out and have started a two-week unit on poetry.  We will be learning a number of poems and having a go at using their structure to write our own versions. We hope to record some of our performances and put them onto Google Classroom for all the parents to see.

Thank you to everyone who has been bringing their homework books in daily.  We will provide new work on a Monday - Thursday.  On a Friday morning we encourage all the children to bring their books in and we share with each other what we have done.

Year 2

Year 2 have had a wonderful few weeks full of exciting learning!

In Geography, they've been comparing London to Nairobi, discovering the similarities and differences between these two capital cities including landmarks and daily life in different parts of the world.

In Maths, the children have been working hard to master the column method for subtraction, developing their understanding of place value.

In English, our young authors have been planning and writing imaginative narratives where their main characters use their imagination to transform into exciting roles – astronauts, racing drivers, scuba divers, ballerinas and more! The children have shown wonderful creativity and enthusiasm, creating engaging characters and using descriptive language to bring their adventures to life.

Year 3

Year 3 have had a couple of exciting weeks!

The children loved their trips to the Hatfield Quarry and Amwell Nature Reserve. Thank you to the volunteers who helped out!

We have started our next English topic which is speeches, the children will be trying to prove they are the right person for the job!

In our Maths we will be starting to look at fractions of different amounts. We will be finishing off our Science topic of Forces and Magnets where the children have carried out a range of tests.

Year 4

Year 4 have continued to make strong progress in Maths and have been working on adding and subtracting fractions. They are now moving on to solving more fraction problems that require reasoning and application.

In English, they are writing their own narratives inspired by Leon and the Place Between, practising prepositions, fronted adverbials, dialogue and the "show, don't tell" technique to bring characters and settings to life. They have used their creativity to imagine their own magical places their character transports to.

During Science Week the children enjoyed hands-on investigations into laundry detergents, testing and observing whether capsules, liquid or powder detergent removed stains the best. They had lots of questions surrounding Science, supporting the Science Week theme of 'Curiosity'.

In Art they have been exploring textiles through tie-dyeing and weaving, experimenting with colour, pattern and texture.

Finally, well done to everyone for their hard-work during assessment week. We are very proud of their creativity, curiosity and resilience and look forward to seeing their finished pieces.

Year 5

Sanchez and Hockney classes both worked very hard in all their assessments last week (Assessment Week).

Last week was also Science Week, and in our science lessons the children explored a very famous astronaut, engineer and medical doctor named Mae Jemison. Using their research skills, the students discovered enough information to create engaging and factual posters. In other science lessons, we began our unit on Planets. The children thoroughly enjoyed learning about the Moon and how it changes over time. They explored the different phases of the Moon and discovered how its appearance shifts throughout a lunar month as it orbits the Earth.

The children also learnt about why we experience seasons, understanding that the Earth’s tilt affects how much sunlight different parts of the planet receive at different times of the year.

The children also seem to be enjoying our new home learning system, and we have seen high levels of engagement and enthusiasm. This daily practice will undoubtedly benefit them in the long term!

Year 6

Recently we have been exploring multiplying and dividing fractions in Maths. A tricky part of this is changing a mixed number into an improper fractions (vice-versa) and simplifying fractions. These are some areas that would be good to practice at home!

In English, we have just started to learn about biographies. At the end of the unit, we will be writing a biography about someone famous who has done something extraordinary.

In the afternoons, we have been making the most of last week's science week and have been looking at the light spectrum and how our eyes perceive it.
