Foundation Stage

Over the past week, Foundation have been busy learning all about frogs. We discovered lots of interesting facts about the life cycle of a frog, including how frogs begin as tiny tadpoles. The children also made lovely ponds for their frogs using tissue paper and cut-out images, and some had a go at labelling their work too.

Our "Let’s Grow" topic has been a big hit, and we are looking forward to hearing whether any of you have managed to grow your bean. Please do send in any photographs if you are able to - we always love seeing the children’s learning at home.

As next week is half-term, we hope you have a lovely break.

Keep an eye out for any minibeasts whilst you are enjoying the rain or even sunshine!

Year 1

We have had another busy jam packed two weeks in Year 1. We finished our recent 3D sculpture Art topic making owl sculptures from recycled materials. The children are very excited to display these in our Year 1 unit on Green Lanes is Great in June.

We have also thoroughly enjoyed our recent English topic where the children have written their own poems about their favourite things and bees.

After half term we are looking forward to continuing our hard work.

Please do remember that our Year group assembly will be on Friday 3rd July.

Over the holiday please do continue to practise reading words ready for the phonics screening check the second week back.

Year 2

Year 2 have had a busy term!

In English, the children have been writing their own narratives based on the story The Lost Homework and have loved creating their own characters and imagining what they might lose.

In Maths, we've been exploring multiplication and division using arrays, arranging objects in rows and columns to help them understand these concepts visually.

In PE, we've been focusing on locomotion skills and practising different types of jumps, including hopping, skipping, and leaping, which are helping to develop their coordination and physical confidence.

Year 3

Year 3 have had a super couple of weeks!

They have worked hard on their 3D art and loved creating their own insects.

In Maths we have continued with fractions and focused on solving word problems.

The children also enjoyed practising our year 3 assembly and we are all very proud of them for their hard work!

Year 4

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend the Year 4 Tolmers Assembly on Friday. The children were so excited to share their memories and we are very proud of how confidently they presented. For those unable to attend, the assembly slides will be available on Google Classroom for you to enjoy at home.

In class, the children have been learning about the different features needed to write a non-chronological report in English. They will complete their drafts, then edit before publishing their neatest version with accompanying pictures and design features into their books.

In Maths, we have been revisiting time. The children have practised reading analogue, digital and 24-hour clocks, as well as converting between hours, minutes and seconds. They have also been learning how to calculate the duration of time.

In Science and Design & Technology, the children have been exploring electricity and electrical systems. They have enjoyed building circuits, investigating how switches work, and designing their own electrical systems.

Finally, the children have thoroughly enjoyed developing their skills in golf and tennis during PE lessons this half-term. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they practise both new and familiar skills.

Year 5

Welcome to our final newsletter for Summer 1. As always, the children have enjoyed all aspects of their learning; their skills and knowledge continue to grow.

In English, the children have continued to develop their skills through our Advertising Campaign unit. They have learnt how to design a problem-solving product and annotate it with detailed information about its features and purpose. The children are also able to identify and explain the product’s intended purpose and target audience. In addition, they have explored how to advertise their products effectively by using persuasive language features such as catchy slogans, rhetorical questions, and modal verbs. Alongside this, they have been consolidating their understanding and correct use of full stops, as well as the appropriate use of dialogue within their writing.

In Maths, the children have been consolidating their knowledge and understanding of fractions, with a particular focus on multiplying mixed numbers by whole numbers using a range of strategies. They have also been applying these skills within problem-solving and worded questions to deepen their understanding and reasoning. Additionally, the children have been practising how to calculate square and cube numbers, as well as representing a variety of decimal numbers pictorially to strengthen their conceptual understanding.

Finally, in our Design and Technology unit, the children completed their learning on Structures, where they explored how frames can be strengthened, reinforced, and made rigid. Their learning was inspired by Abraham Darby III and his work as an ironmaster. The children investigated these concepts practically by using paper straws, scissors, and masking tape to design and reinforce their own structures.

We have also begun a new Science unit focused on Living Things and Their Habitats. The children have shown great enthusiasm for this topic and have been particularly fascinated by learning about the life cycle of a butterfly!

Year 6

The Year 6's absolutely smashed their SATs! Even though it was difficult, they persevered. I have heard it was all worth it for the post-SATs biscuits, squash, extra break-time and Kahoot Quizzes.

After our tests finished, we did a whole day of art. We followed a fine art style of work to paint Koi fish in a pond.

This week, we have been revisiting some English skills before writing a narrative after half-term. Our class book, Dare to be You, has inspired the classes to be brave and outspoken (which has especially helped with their auditions for the end of year production). Every child will receive a script to practice with over half-term - please ensure your child knows their lines so they feel confident in the play!
