Foundation Stage

This term, the children have been learning all about the world around us. So far, we have explored maps from different areas and discussed what we can see. For example, we noticed that blue represents the water, like the sea or the rivers, and green represents the land, grass or trees.

This week, we have been learning about where different animals live, such as polar bears in the Arctic and gorillas in the jungle. The children enjoyed sorting animals according to their habitats in Riley, and they also created their own jungle pictures using tissue paper for the animals to hide behind in Kusama.

Next week will be our first Green Lanes is Great event, and we hope you will be able to join us to sing our song; the children have been practising so hard.

Next week is also Sports Day, and the children have been busy practising all of their races. Our house group list will be posted on Google Classroom, so please do take a look. It will tell you which colour your child needs to wear to represent their house.

Year 1

Well done to all of Year 1 for working so hard with their phonics so far this year. I have been so proud of their positivity and good nature this week during our Phonics Screening check. They all worked so hard and did their best.

We have already begun our final half-term of phonics, where we will be learning the remaining sounds of phase 5. The children are very excited to learn them! Please continue to bring in library books and reading books every Monday to be changed. We will continue our hard work moving up reading levels till the last week of the year.

This week we are finishing our Geography unit on Hot and Cold countries. We will then move onto an Art unit where we will be making 3D face portraits, a Design and Technology unit where we will sew hand warmers, a database unit in Computing and finishing with another D&T unit where we will be making healthy smoothies.

Gentle reminder: our year group assembly is Friday 3rd July. It will be great to see you there.

Year 2

So far this term, Year 2 have been working hard across all areas of the curriculum.

In Maths, we have been exploring fractions and learning how to find halves, quarters and thirds of different numbers.

In English, we have started reading SuperJoe and have been using adjectives and adverbs to make our writing more interesting and descriptive.

In Computing, we have enjoyed using the Chromebooks to create our own music and explore different sounds and rhythms.

Year 3

Year 3 have had a super couple of weeks and have worked incredibly hard.

Our English lessons have been focusing on personal narratives and how we might want to make the reader feel using different writing techniques.

In our Maths lessons we have been getting to grips with formal written multiplication. We are still getting there with it!

Science has been our topic over the last couple of weeks and the children have really enjoyed learning about how shadows are formed and if we need light to see things.

The children continue to impress us with their hard work and resilience this term!

Year 4

Year 4 have had exciting learning experiences across the curriculum, so far. In Maths, the exploration of shapes has not only made year 4 more aware of the shapes around them but has also encouraged creativity through art. The children have been busy identifying and creating both 2D and 3D shapes, linking their mathematical understanding to real-world applications such as design. The children created their own versions of Kandinsky's art.

In English, our budding poets have delved into the works of Valerie Bloom, allowing them to appreciate the beauty of language while expressing their own thoughts and feelings. The students have been crafting their own poems, and we are thrilled to see their creativity shine through.

In History, our historical enquiry into ancient Egyptians has led to the children considering what role they would prefer to take on. They found the process of mummification fascinating and were surprised to find out that the brain was removed through the nose.

In PE, the children have started our athletics unit by trying to beat their own personal best when sprinting. They are also learning to understand the importance of personal bests, which not only applies to sports but also encourages a growth mindset in academics and personal goals. We will be continuing to prepare for sports day and have our own heats in the lesson to decide who will be racing on Sports Day.

Finally, our Learning for Life lessons address growing up and how their bodies will change as they grow older. We invite parents to engage in conversations about these topics at home, reinforcing the importance of health and well-being and answering any questions they may have.

So far, we have had a great start to our final half-term in year 4, and look forward to all the exciting events coming up.

Year 5

Our Year 5 pupils have had a fantastic start to the half-term, demonstrating excellent attitudes to learning across all subjects. Here's what they've been up to:

In English, they have been consolidating their grammar knowledge to strengthen their writing skills. They have been mastering:

  • Using commas for parenthesis, question marks, and exclamation marks with confidence
  • Relative clauses – learning how to add detail and sophistication to their sentences

This week's assessments have been a real celebration of their hard work, with pupils confidently applying everything they've learnt.

In maths, we've been exploring the connections between percentages, fractions, and decimals. Our pupils have been using hands-on resources like bead strings and rods to visualise these concepts before tackling them independently. The children love using these concrete materials and are growing increasingly confident in using them to support their mathematical thinking.

In our history lessons, Year 5 have been time-travelling back to ancient Central America! They've been investigating:

  • Where the Mayans lived
  • Significant events in Mayan history
  • What Maya city-states were like
  • The incredible inventions of the Maya people

Each pupil chose to focus on either Tikal or Chichen Itza as a case study, developing their research and presentation skills along the way.

We are now eagerly looking forward to two brilliant upcoming events:

Green Lanes is Great Open Evening – where pupils will showcase their best work to families and the community.

Sports Day – a chance to demonstrate teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship.

We're incredibly proud of Year 5's achievements so far. Thank you for your continued support at home – it makes all the difference!

Year 6

In this half term we have been practising cricket and rounders skills.

We've been learning about 5 different monarchs in History and comparing them in their impact on Britain.

There has been lots of singing and acting in our production rehearsals - please practice the lines with your children at home.

In English, we have been writing fantasy narratives ready for our final writing assessment. These have been extraordinary!!

There have been lots of talks about Secondary School and the upcoming transition day.

Inclusion and Banksy

APDR Review Meetings – Week Commencing 22nd and 29th June

Our half-termly APDR meetings will be taking place during the week commencing 22nd and 29th June. This is an important opportunity to discuss your child's progress, achievements and next steps with their class teacher.
