Dear Parents and Carers,

A Huge Thank You to the GLSA
We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to the GLSA for organising an absolutely amazing Summer Fair!  The event was a wonderful success and brought our school community together in such a special way.

The GLSA are just £200 short of their fundraising target.  If you would like to help by making an additional donation, or if you have an employer that might be interested in supporting us, please donate via this link Donate here.  The GLSA announced earlier today that they raised an epic fundraising total of £5,882!  All funds raised will be going towards air conditioning for our classrooms – the more money we raise, the more classrooms we can have air conditioned!

End of Year Reports – Tomorrow
Tomorrow you will receive your child's end of year report.  This includes details of their last test scores and the teacher assessment of your child's progress.

  • Green box: If your child has been given a green box, you can be reassured that we have no concerns and everything is going well.
  • Red box: If there is a red box, we would like to have a further chat to talk about what we can do to support your child to make sure they are reaching their full potential.

We are hoping this new look report will help you understand how your child is doing.

New Classes and Teachers 
We will also be letting you know the new classes and teachers for the next academic year.

All next week, the children will be spending time with their new teachers in their new classrooms.

Celebrating Our 85th Birthday! – Tuesday 21st July
We will shortly be celebrating the school's 85th Birthday on Tuesday 21st July. Your child is invited to dress as their decade:

  • Year 6: 1940s
  • Year 5: 1950s
  • Year 4: 1960s
  • Year 3: 1970s
  • Year 2: 1980s
  • Year 1: 1990s
  • Reception: 2000 onwards

This can just be a small nod to the decade, such as a scarf or hairstyle – please don't spend money on expensive outfits.

Dancing Through the Decades
We will be having fun with dancing to the decades in the afternoon. You are very welcome to come and watch:

  • Reception: 1:30-1:40pm
  • Year 1: 1:40-1:50pm
  • Year 2: 1:50-2:00pm
  • Year 3: 2:00-2:10pm
  • Year 4: 2:10-2:20pm
  • Year 5: 2:20-2:30pm
  • Year 6: 2:30-2:40pm

Please note: We are watching the weather and temperatures, so be aware that times may need to move to the morning.  We will update you if this happens.

Welly and Waterproof Exchange
We will be organising a welly and waterproof exchange.  Just look out for the welly and waterproof stations to donate your child's wellies or waterproofs, and feel free to choose from the donation stations.

Share Your Green Lanes Memories
Finally, we are looking for memories of Green Lanes Primary School through the years.  If you know any ex-pupils, please encourage them to contact us at head@greenlanes.herts.sch.uk about their fond memories and any photos they may have.

History Tours of the School
We will be organising history tours of the school on Monday 20th July at 9:30am and 2:00pm.  Each tour will take 45 minutes. Email the School Office at admin@greenlanes.herts.sch.uk to book a place on one of the tours.

Foundation Stage

 

This week, we made jam sandwiches!  We were working like a computer and thinking about how we would tell a robot to make a jam sandwich. For example, when we said, “Put the jam on the bread”, the robot put the jam jar on the bread!  It was very funny, and then we all had a go ourselves. 

I can’t believe that it is nearly the end of the year!  Next week in Foundation, we will be talking all about the children’s transition to Year 1. We are so proud of the progress and confidence your children have made this year.  They will soon have the opportunity to meet their new teachers and have a look around their new classrooms, which is very exciting!

Please can you make sure that all reading books and school library books are returned by the 17th July.  New books at the new reading levels will be issued in September.  If you have time over the summer, don’t forget to take part in the Hertfordshire Libraries Summer Reading Challenge.  It’s a lovely way for the children to keep up with their reading over the break.  Thank you all for an amazing year and good luck in year 1!

 

Year 1

 

As the end of year approaches, I wanted to thank all the parents and carers of Year 1 for your support this academic year.  The children have worked so hard throughout the year, and we are all so proud of each and every one of them. 

Next week we will be beginning our transition activities.  The children will be visiting their new class Monday - Thursday for 45 minutes in the afternoons.  They will get time to explore their new room and form new relationships with their teaching staff. 

We will be collecting all school and library books from next Monday 13th July.  Please have a look at home and bring in any that you find before the end of term.  Next week we will also begin learning our dance routines for our 1990's songs Wonderwall and Wigfield - Saturday Night. If you know these routines please do practise them at home!

 

Year 2

 

Year 2 had a wonderful trip to the De Havilland Museum, where they behaved brilliantly and thoroughly enjoyed taking part in a range of exciting activities. They learnt about different types of aeroplanes and loved making their own paper aeroplanes and peg aeroplanes. A huge thank you to all of our parent helpers for supporting the trip and helping to make the day such a success.

We are also looking forward to the Year 2 assembly on Friday 10th, where the children are excited to tell you all about the learning they have done throughout the year. We hope to see you all there.

 

Year 3

 

The children have had a lovely couple of weeks despite the heat! 

We had an amazing time at the Verulamium Museum where the children consolidated their previous history learning.  They had a great time dressing up as Romans at the market and finding different items from Roman times!

This week we have published our personal narratives which the children worked hard on and should be proud of!  We made sure to include the power of 3, similes and dialogue!

In our maths lessons we have finished our division topic and have moved onto time.

Computing will be our topic for the next two weeks and the children will be learning about desktop publishing!

 

Year 4

 

In English, the children have worked hard to finish their narrative writing and have been carefully editing, improving and publishing their stories. They have focused on making their writing as exciting and effective as possible, using ambitious vocabulary, powerful verbs and descriptive detail to bring their adventure narratives to life. We are very proud of the effort and creativity they have shown throughout this unit.

In Maths, the children have been learning about geometry, with a particular focus on angles and coordinates. They have practised identifying different types of angles and using their knowledge to solve problems. They have also explored how to read and plot coordinates.

In DT, the children have been busy preparing and making a chickpea curry. They have developed their practical cooking skills and learnt about following a recipe safely and carefully. The curry was a great success, and lots of the children enjoyed it so much that they asked for seconds!

With a few school days left, we would like to say thank you to all of Year 4 for making this academic year so enjoyable. We have made lots of memories together and learnt so many new things. You should all be proud of yourself for what you have accomplished. We wish you the best of luck in Year 5 and hope you have a fun, safe summer! 


 

Year 5

 

Last week, the children published their survival guides. They demonstrated excellent understanding of explanation text features, skillfully incorporating technical vocabulary, relative clauses and parentheses throughout their writing. It was wonderful to see how brilliantly they applied ideas from our core text to create comprehensive and engaging guides. This week, we've begun an exciting two-week unit on 'writing to discuss', focusing specifically on reviews. By the end of this unit, pupils will draft and publish a review about a recent trip or experience they've had. This will be their final writing piece for Year 5, giving them the perfect opportunity to showcase all the skills they've developed this year.

We've just completed our unit on area and perimeter, where the children have been finding the area and perimeter of rectilinear shapes and working out the value of missing sides using known information. They've shown great problem-solving skills in this area! We're now moving onto an exciting new unit on angles. Over the coming weeks, pupils will be exploring angles and turns, identifying and comparing different types of angles, and learning how to use a protractor accurately – an essential skill for their mathematical toolkit.

In our art lessons, we've been exploring the wonderful world of watercolour painting, taking inspiration from American painter and artist Jim Dine. The children have experimented with a range of creative effects, including adding substances like table salt and rock salt to their paint to create unique textures. They've also discovered the different effects that can be achieved by removing layers of paint using various materials. The pupils absolutely loved this hands-on, experimental approach to art!

Our Year 5s have worked incredibly hard this year and fully embraced all areas of the curriculum. We're so proud of everything they've achieved and wish them all the very best as they move into Year 6!

Year 6

 

We have been very busy over the last two weeks!  Year 6's have been rehearsing their production of 'Jumashi' most days, and we are so excited to show parents/carers and loved ones our amazing performances! 

Year 6 have been to their secondary schools today, and we hope it is a great experience!  Please ensure you return any tickets that you do not need for the production so we can assign them to other people.

There will have been communications of RSE dates from the office, so please do let us know if you need to opt your child out of the non-statutory lessons. 

We also visited the food and farming festival and had a great day – we especially loved the dancing sheep show.

Football Camp Taster Session - Sunday 12th July 2026

We are pleased to share details of a Football Camp Taster Session taking place on Sunday 12th July 2026 at Green Lanes Primary School. Please see the attached information for further details.

If you could send your child's name, their current school and current football experience (beginner, intermediate, or advanced) to theonsideproject@gmail.com that would be useful, although not essential.

Please note that during the sessions there will be no access to the school building, including toilets.
