This week in Reception, we began learning about our class artists. We enjoyed creating our own artwork inspired by them, including stripes for Riley and dots for Kusama.

We have also started our Little Wandle phonics sessions, learning the sounds s, a, t and p. For more information, please refer to our curriculum overview to see our phonics sequence.

In maths, we have been exploring numbers up to 5 to strengthen our recognition of numerals and early maths skills. Next week, we will move on to numbers from 5 to 10.

Our Reception Essential Writing unit this month is focused on the All About Me theme. We have begun by creating the front pages for our books and making sure we included our author name.

Just a reminder, please email or hand a family photo to an adult so we can display it on our family wall.

We have had another very busy two weeks in Year 1. In English we have finished our own All About Me books. The children have worked hard to combine our learning about lists and writing sentences to make their own books with illustrations. These will proudly be displayed on our proud walls. 

In Maths we have finished our first unit on Geometry -  with a particular focus on positional language and ordinal numbers. We have moved onto a unit where the children will practise their subitising skills before moving onto comparing groups. 

In Science we have learnt about the four seasons and have been able to compare their features. We have also introduced the concept of day and night, why it happens. 

In PE we are half way through our first 'running unit'. We began by learning the physical attributes which make us better runners and now are using the running skills we have learnt and applying them in game situations.

It has been a busy and exciting week in Year 2!

In Maths, we have been exploring numbers up to 100 and learning how to represent them using tens and ones (Base 10). The children have been practising drawing these representations in their books to help strengthen their understanding of place value.

In English, we have been putting our imaginations to work as we begin writing our very own disaster stories! We have been thinking carefully about characters, settings and exciting events to make our stories engaging for the reader.

In Science, we have been learning about living things and exploring the different places they live. We enjoyed going on a bug hunt around our school to discover the different mini habitats, or microhabitats, where insects and other tiny creatures can be found.

It has been wonderful to see the children's curiosity and enthusiasm throughout our learning this week!

Maths: Exploring Negative and Decimal Numbers

This week, our pupils dived into the world of negative numbers and decimals!

• Negative Numbers: Children learnt how numbers can be less than zero, using real-life examples like temperatures below freezing and bank account balances.
• Decimal Numbers: We explored decimal place value by comparing numbers, discussing which numbers have greater value and how we know

• Discuss real-life situations involving negative numbers (e.g. checking the weather forecast).

English: Creating Our Own Chimeras
This week, we introduced the concept of a chimera—a mythical creature made up of parts from different animals (for example, a lion’s body, a goat’s head, and a snake’s tail!).

Pupils have been busy designing their own chimeras and are preparing to write imaginative reports about them.

How you can support:

• Ask your child to describe their chimera and the animals it combines.
• Encourage them to use descriptive words and think about their creature’s habitat and abilities.

Science: Materials and Their Properties
We’ve been investigating different materials and their soluble properties in class this week. The children have helped with experiments, testing which dissolve to form a solution and which do not. They have written up these experiments and considered how to achieve the inverse – extracting materials from a solution. Ask the children what happens when you boil seawater.

We have now finished our scary narratives about things that go bump in the night, and they are terrifyingly good! The children used great vocabulary and impressive relative clauses to bring their writing to life.

In Maths, we have been exploring place value in more depth and are now moving on to multiplying by 10, 100 and 1,000. Our arithmetic practice has also been excellent, with lots of children using mathematical vocabulary confidently and accurately.

In Topic, we have continued learning about World War II, including the Blitz, and we are now moving on to electricity in Science.

A huge well done to all of our Year 6 children who took part in the Stanborough Sports Event. They represented Green Lanes brilliantly and were fantastic ambassadors for the school.

Dear parent/carer,

Consultation on 20mph speed limits in Hatfield.

Some roads in Hatfield already have a 20mph speed limit, we’re now asking whether more streets should be included.

We’re not considering 20mph limits on key distributor roads such as South Way, Comet Way and Cavendish Way. We’re also not proposing 20mph limits on key roads such as Mosquito Way and Hatfield Avenue, which already have some separate routes for walking and cycling.

Through our ‘right place, right pace’ approach, we recognise that different roads serve different purposes. Some roads are places where people live, walk, wheel, cycle, shop, access schools and spend time, while others play an important role in helping people travel between communities.
